I can remember ages ago some asking about this. now i need to know, what the rules when using other peoples music. And if they are quite strict or i have to pay anything, then how can i get around it. e.g. playing only a 21 sec snipet, or you actually play the music.
Any info would be cool

There are no ways around the copyright laws involving music etc. If you use it, you have to contact the publisher and get permission, and they will almost certainly charge you.
Then again, if the total audience for your film will be you and your mates, then you might as well just rip-off any music you want because the publisher will never know or care.
Alternatively you COULD pay a composer to do some original music for you. I am available (and v. cheap!)

There are plenty of companies that produce copyright free music for use in TV. The production values aren't that great but if your stuck you could check them out. here are a few names:
De Wolf
KPM
Carlin
Give them a rough idea of what you want they send you some CD's then you call them up, tell them the track, composer and duration. Be honest and say its for a student or no budget production. They will give you permission to use it with no or very low fee.

Contact the performing rights society (PRS) should be a local office for nottingham see the phone book or directory enquiries - they will give you advice on (if you have to) using copyrighted music... or if you have a mac, register with 'itools' (www.apple.com/itools) and there you can access a lot of good quality music through your 'idisk' (kinda for free with no copyright)... or just get these composers to do some work for you!

Use local artists. They're a lot more likely to appreciate it and give you less hassle. It also helps if you show up at their gigs now and then.
